As Conservatives we believe strongly in local democracy and want to hear about your hopes and concerns.  We are determined to preserve the character of Buckhurst Hill and Loughton South protect the green spaces that make them pleasant places for families to live.  Conservatives have pledged to abolish the undemocratic and unwieldy tier of regional planning.  We believe decisions about planning and development should be made by our locally elected representatives.

Sure Start Centre opening.

Other  good news story is that the Sure Start Children’s Centre is now open in Victoria Road, Buckhurst Hill (next to Waitrose). I am told the centre offers good facilities and excellent links have been made with Health Visitors and the local Health Centre. It is staffed by one Senior Centre Worker and three Support Staff so that parents and carers can get the advice, support and information they need.

With Buckhurst Hill County Primary School also now about to take an extra 15 pupils a year, we have significantly increased the capacity at Primary School level. This won’t necessarily solve all the problems overnight but it is definitely going to help local parents find school places in Buckhurst Hill.

Community Foundation

FUNDS FROM ESSEX COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
I have managed to secure a grant of £2500 towards supporting our local Home Start service. This voluntary organisation aims to provide support, friendship and practical assistance for families who are experiencing difficulties, where there is at least one child under the age of 5. They work in prevention and intervention to give children a better start in life and last year there were 43 volunteers who helped some 60 families in our area.

October Report

Essex County Council Newsletter – October 2010

As I write this copy for our October newsletter, I am very aware that we are all waiting for the Government’s announcements regarding public spending and government grants to local authorities. Nearly everyone understands that the country is practically bankrupt with unrealistic spending by the previous government and pledges it made with no means left to pay for anything.  I think we all recognise that there have to be choices made about where money is spent and we have to try to make sure that we get value for money and still do our utmost to protect essential services and the most vulnerable in our society. click on the read more link to view the full report on Planning, Saving Money,Council Care,Highways,Re-cycling & Democracy. read more

The County Council is moving forward on part-night street lighting where residential roads will not have street lights on all night. As I have said before this will not affect busy areas, main roads or around stations, but we do need to acknowledge that there will be significant carbon and light pollution reductions across Essex. For those of you who like facts and figures, current street lighting is responsible for about 21,000 tonnes of carbon each year, and if 70% of street lights were switched to part night lighting, it would reduce carbon emissions by 8,000 tonnes per year. It would also save about £1m for us ratepayers
